| Abstract: | The woods are full of those who have harnessed machines the professional literature of the past few years reports many breakthroughs of far-reaching importance and is filled with one success story after another in such diverse fields as auto -abstracting, file loading, machine translation, and successful search strategies for electronically massaging huge masses of stored bibliographic data. For some reason, evidence of difficulties or of failures does not seem to float to the top as easily. While we have not been at this business long enough to be counted failures, we can certainly lend perspective as far as difficulties go. To characterize Columbia's libraries will help put the description of both our activities and our problems in context. |
