| Abstract: |
I hope that no one will read a defensive tone into these remarks,
for the rare book librarian is at first startled at the thought of bringing
a discussion of the rare book trade into a symposium on "the practical
operations of libraries in [acquisitions] functions." We have become
weary in the struggle to establish our belief that rare books are
a fit subject for discussion among other "practical" aspects of librarianship.
I happily substitute gratitude for defensiveness, noting
that rare bookmen here are accepted as practical librarians, interested
in and capable of discussing the broader aspects of building
library collections. |
