Title:Bidirectional EV charger with real and reactive power control

Abstract:Fleets of electric vehicles have the potential to be used as traffic and electric grid resources in cities with proper management. This thesis models an electric vehicle battery and a bidirectional charger with real and reactive power control. These will later be used in a larger simulation of a distribution network with a fleet of electric vehicles and distributed chargers in a city with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and grid-to-vehicle (G2V) applications. The vehicle charger is capable of receiving real and reactive power commands and adjusting the battery current through several feedback loops. The charger consists of a boost rectifier and DC-DC converter. When the vehicle is charging, the DC-DC converter acts as a buck converter. If the vehicle is providing energy to the grid then the DC-DC converter behaves as a boost converter. The battery is modeled to include degradation of the battery state of health (SoH) in order to understand the necessary incentives to compensate vehicle owners for providing grid services.
