Abstract:Of the various trends in library automation today, public access is clearly one of the most difficult, complex, and potentially rewarding areas of development. The motivation may be economic or it may be the desire to offer a new standard of service; in either case the designer of a public access system finds himself in largely uncharted waters. In planning the 1980 clinic, we attempted to bring together speakers who could address both the philosophical foundations and the nuts-and-bolts reality of public access.
