Abstract:

We are a team of computer science students, working in the SPIN (Students Pushing for Innovation) Program of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Our team works with Prof. Dr. André Schleife, Materials Science & Engineering, on a data visualization framework for complex atomic arrangements and electron densities. Atomic geometries of various materials are rendered as 3D objects and different atomic species are color-coded. Interactivity, achieved using the Google Daydream controller, allows the user to rotate the view, zoom in and out, and select and highlight atoms of different types. Atoms can be connected to visualize chemical bonding and polyhedra are used to illustrate the immediate chemical environment. This results in beautiful visualizations that provide the user with an intuitive, three-dimensional understanding of complicated geometries of modern materials. Our current implementation of this interactive virtual reality Android application is built with the Unity Engine and C#. The app is versatile and highly scalable since it retrieves data from a web server. We use Google Daydream to make the visualization mobile and accessible to students in class and the general public during outreach events. If you need a demonstration of the application on Google Daydream hardware, please contact us.
