Abstract:Responding to user needs for data services in libraries poses a complex challenge. Programs preparing pre-service information professionals to provide these services for library users, staff, and the organization must address multiple competencies related to these levels and in multiple contexts. In this study, researchers investigated a design approach as a method for developing an effective and innovative response. The Design Thinking for Libraries method was simulated to evaluate its effectiveness as a process for developing a pre-service professional preparation program in data service at two partner institutions. Results suggest that this method produces more insight into nuances of the problem and enhances effectiveness and innovation.
