Abstract:This poster reports the issues we encountered in the investigation of WeChat Official Accounts. The goal of our study is to explore how scientific articles are communicated on WeChat, with a particular focus on whether it can be a promising source of altmetrics. WeChat is different from other influential social media tools in many aspects including the technological affordances, user groups, languages used, among others. This poster describes and discusses findings of the WeChat specific features regarding technical barriers (based on the infrastructure and affordances), language barriers (mainly between English and Chinese), cultural barriers (about commenting and sharing behavior of users), and policy barriers.
