Abstract:Wear behavior of heat treated 1060 steel under sliding or pure rolling conditions have been studied well but how pure rolling affect wear behavior needs clearer relationship. Therefore, more investigation needs to be done in order to generate a complete relationship. Vacuum heat treated 1060 steel disks with 35mm on both radius and curved side edges were selected as experimental materials due to its content and mechanical properties similarities with rail steel. All experiments were conducted by a twin-disk tribometer that could control rotating speed precisely and separately. In total 4 experiments were completed with pure rolling phase followed by sliding phase in which the former covered 0%, 4.17%, 16.67% and 66.67% of the total experiment, respectively. Wear track width and deformation track width were measured from pictures and used to calculate wear volume, wear rate as well as maximum contact pressures over the whole experiment. Results from wear rate, hardness tests and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) presented increasing wear rate, hardened microstructures and smaller lamella spacing as duration of pure rolling increased.
