Abstract: | Soon after the start of the Civil War, the Union began planning to drive Confederate forces from Kentucky and Tennessee. Control of the river systems of the region was necessary to for movement of forces and materials and to ensure safety of supply lines in these operations. This account describes the activities of the Union gunboats involved in support of military operations on the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers from October 1861-December 1861-1864. |
