Abstract:In database search tasks, query formulation has been a complex cognitive process that requires substantial user effort; thus, the integration of query formulation assistance techniques into the system is essential. Many studies have introduced visual graph interfaces to alleviate users’ burden in query formulation activities. In the field of Chinese digital humanities, query formulation is a particularly tough task, demanding user’s background knowledge on Chinese history and culture. This paper presents a prototype with a visual query expansion mechanism. The subsequent user study with questionnaire shows that the query expansion view, consisting of a bar chart of items in query matching relevance sequence, is a more effective visual query expansion tool than the query popularity view or the hybrid view of query popularity and relevancy.
