Title:Narrowly endemic and nervous; capturing Cambarus causeyi
Author(s):Bloomer, Caitlin
Subject(s):Boston Mountains Crayfish
Ozark Mountains
Abstract:This image was taken during my first experience of field work as a masters student at UIUC so it means a lot to me personally. Surveying the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas for Quebedeaux's project, we discovered Cambarus causeyi (Boston Mountains Crayfish) in a never before recorded location. This species has been noted as 'special concern' in Arkansas due to its narrowly endemic range, so finding a new population was a great success. Capturing the image of this tiny crayfish against a human hand serves as a reminder of how important our role as NRES students is, to maintain, protect, and advocate for the natural world we study.
