Water Contamination
Abstract:My Master’s Capstone project is a watershed plan for the Salt Creek Watershed, primarily based in Effingham County (where I took this picture). Through my research, I have discovered that, due to climate change, Illinois has been subject to an alarming increase in extreme precipitation events, resulting in increased ground and surface water contamination. Nitrogen/nitrates, phosphorus, manganese, growth hormones, antibiotics, herbicides, insecticides, and pathogens (such as E. coli), are turning up in tests of Illinois waterways. This problem brings a multiplicity of consequences that require innovative, as well as commonsense interventions. We are encouraging watershed communities to adopt green infrastructure projects to decrease pollution of our waterways.
