Abstract:This teaching unit introduces students to critical dance pedagogy, which is based on Dwight Conquergood's framework for critical performance ethnography. Students are encouraged to consider dance as act that can build community, protest injustice, express social roles, and build hope. The 7 folkdances covered by the material are DonDoumba (West Africa), Cumbia (Colombia), Hula (Hawaii), Nihon Buyo (Japan), Flamenco (Spain), Bharathanatyam (Southern India), and Dabkeh (Palestine). The slideshow includes links to recommended videos and resources.
