Title:Biaxial fatigue studies of high strength steels clad with stainless steel final report

Abstract:This research was conducted to determine the resistance to cyclic mechanical loading of the bond between stainless steel clad to carbon steel backing plate. It was originally contemplated that a cyclically loaded plate specimen subjected to a state of biaxial would be the most suitable test specimen. During the course of the research, however, it was determined that bending fatigue and static bend specimens were more sensitive detectors of a poor bond. Bond failures were not developed in well bonded clad plate; the only bond failures that were developed were in plate that was considered by the supplier to have a faulty bond. It was demonstrated that there was no correlation between the indication of a sound bond by ultrasonic means and the resistance of the bond to cyclic mechanical loading. That conclusion was based upon the test of one steel of roll bonded backing plate.
