Abstract:This report covers a brief review of the data available on the extent to which the type and quality of surface finish affects the fatigue strength of metal members. Polished steel specimens exhibit a higher endurance limit than those with a somewhat rougher surface (turned, ground, or filed). However, it is necessary also to consider the physical changes in the surface layers induced by processing as well as the geometrical nature (relative roughness) of the surface finish. The physical characteristics of surface layers whose properties differ from those of the underlying material (as in plated, clad or decarburized layers) may be of greater importance in controlling the endurance limit than the mechanical properties of the base metal. Surface treatments such as flame or induction hardening, shot peening, or cold rolling, as well as chemical surface treatments (nitriding or case carburizing) have pronounced effects on the fatigue strength; after treatments of these types the relative roughness of the surface is of lesser importance. For many of these special processing operations the accompanying residual stresses probably exert a greater influence on the fatigue strength than the surface roughness.
