Abstract:An investigation was made to determine the influence of strain aging on the shape of the S-N diagram. Fatigue tests were conducted on an S. A. E. 1018 steel at 70, 140, 250, and 440 degrees Fahrenheit and for three different carbon and nitrogen contents to determine the effect of temperature and of carbon and nitrogen content on the position of the “knee” in the S-N diagram. Statistical methods were used to define the knee position in terms of the experimental data. It was found that the position of the knee in the S-N diagram was influenced by the carbon and nitrogen content of the steel and also by the temperature at which the tests were conducted. These changes occurred in a manner which was qualitatively consistent with predictions which may be made from strain aging theory.
