Abstract: | University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is performing research to improve the cost-effectiveness of algal carbon dioxide (CO2) utilization by synergistic integration with power plant and wastewater treatment operations. The technical objectives are related to algae cultivation with post-flue-gas desulfurization (FGD), CO2 capture processes, algae dewatering/drying processes, algal biomass in animal feed applications, integration with power plant and wastewater treatment operations, and techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle analysis (LCA). Benefits include performing novel research and development (R&D) of algae-based technology to utilize anthropogenic CO2 as a feedstock. The technology coverts CO2 into a marketable product in order to decrease in CO2 emissions, and and produce a superior product compared to commercially available products produced with existing state-of-the-art technology.
