Abstract:New technologies can have a significant impact on what we teach and what we do in an iSchool. In this paper, I describe how a new infrastructure option has emerged for information systems and services. The FCC’s “White Spaces” decision involved a large segment of what used to be the NII (National Information Infrastructure) community, a community of considerable affinity to iSchools. In this paper, I argue that this decision is of broad interest to iSchools because: (1) it is a case study that highlights how policy decisions and technology developments interact with each other and (2) many aspects of the follow-up to this decision fall squarely in the domain of iSchools, from the development of white space devices, to building systems to utilize these devices, to building information services to communities that are currently underserved.
