Abstract:The total cross section for the S32 (Y, nP) P30 reaction has been measured from 50 to 300 mev in order to investigate the mechanism of this reaction at these higher energies. Samples of sulphur were irradiated with the bremsstrahlung beam from the University of Illinois 300 mev betatron and the P30 annihilation radiation was measured using gamma ray scintillation spectroscopy techniques. The jesu1ting activation data were analysed for the cross sections using the basic Leiss and Penfold method which has been programmed in Fortran for machine calculations. The results above 150 mev indicate that P30 production from coincident emission of a neutron-proton pair from pseudo-deuteron absorption is relatively small compared to non-pseudo-deuteron processes leading to the emission of a neutron and a proton. A model of п meson production and escape from the nucleus followed by a nuclear cascade and evaporation is seen to agree reasonably well with the experimental results.
