Title: | Models of the Past - Models for the Future: A Comparative Analysis of the Traditions of the Bulgarian Chitalishte and the American Public Library |
Author(s): | Hristova, Rumyana Y. |
Subject(s): | Bulgarian chitalishte
American public library traditions |
Abstract: | This paper traces in parallel the origin, development, and current state of the tradition of "chitalishta" (reading clubs) in Bulgaria and the tradition of public libraries in the United States. The comparative approach is justified by the common ground between the two systems in terms of origin, social roles, and public services provided. To a considerable degree both traditions are also manifestations of the ancient idea of man's perfectibility and as such they both promote literacy, self-education, and self-improvement, which ultimately lead to the progressive development of the local community and society as a whole. |
