|Abstract:||Students in the secondary teacher education curricula of mathematics, science, English, social studies, and foreign languages were studied during the Spring Semester, 1991, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Using a survey and data base searches, information was gathered on academic and personal backgrounds of these students, including students' attendance at a community college, students' concerns in completing their programs at UIUC, and students' goals of entering and remaining in the teaching profession. Follow-up interviews were scheduled with seven students who had earned over 50 semester hours at community colleges.
The research indicated that 11 of 92 students had begun their college work and stayed to earn more than 50 hours at a community college, and that 29 of 92 students had earned some, but fewer than 50 community college hours. Fifty-two students had earned no hours at community colleges. Those students with 50 or more hours from community colleges were somewhat older, had lower high school academic performances than the other two groups, and had also decided to become teachers while at the community college. Several indicated their intentions of returning to the community colleges to become instructors there.
The overall recommendations of this study included calling for more research to be done on community college students who transfer into secondary teacher education programs, and for the personalization of the teacher education programs at UIUC, so that these programs may become more of a "school within a school."
