## Description

Title: Analysis of interface and subinterface cracks with crack-face contact and interface shear yield zones Author(s): Yang, Mingfa Doctoral Committee Chair(s): Kim, Kyung-Suk Department / Program: Engineering, Mechanical Discipline: Engineering, Mechanical Degree Granting Institution: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Degree: Ph.D. Genre: Dissertation Subject(s): Engineering, Mechanical Abstract: Plane strain problems for an interface crack, with two interface shear yield zones and one crack-face contact zone, and for a crack parallel to an interface between dissimilar materials, with crack-face contact zone near one of the crack tips, are studied. These interface crack and subinterface crack problems are formulated as systems of nonlinear Cauchy-type singular integral equations which are solved numerically using Erdogan and Gupta' s (1972) method. The physically pathological features of interpenetration of the crack faces and oscillation of the near tip fields are eliminated in the solutions by accounting for plastic deformation of the interlayer and contact of the crack faces. The solutions predict that for an interface crack or a subinterface crack in a combined normal and shear stress field, the crack may extend even when the normal stress is compressive. The behavior of a subinterface crack depends on both Dundurs parameters $\alpha$ and $\beta$ rather than only on $\beta$ for an interface crack. The behavior of the cracks can be determined from the interaction of the singularities at the crack tips caused by the normal and shear stress fields.
