 Title: A study of short-lived deuterium and short-lived deuterium* mesons Author(s): Freese, Timothy Jay Department / Program: Physics Discipline: Physics Degree Granting Institution: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Degree: Ph.D. Genre: Dissertation Subject(s): Physics, Elementary Particles and High Energy Abstract: Hadronic decays of the $D\sb{s}$ are studied in $e\sp+e\sp-$ annihilation at center-of-mass energy 4.14 GeV/c$\sp2$. The data were collected with the Mark III detector at the storage ring SPEAR at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The $D\sb{s}$ mesons are produced predominantly in the reaction $e\sp+e\sp-\to D\sbsp{s}{\pm}D\sbsp{s}{\*\mp}$, allowing measurement of the $D\sb{s}$ and $D\sbsp{s}{\*}$ masses. Measurements or upper limits of the cross section times branching fraction are presented for $D\sbsp{s}{+}\to\phi\pi\sp+$, K$\sp{\*0}$K$\sp+$, non-resonant K$\sp+$K$\sp-\pi\sp+$, $\phi\pi\sp+\pi\sp0$, $\phi\rho\sp+$, $\eta\pi\sp+$, $\omega\pi\sp+$, and $\eta\sp\prime\pi\sp+$. The relative branching fraction for $D\sbsp{s}{+}\to\eta\sp\prime\pi\sp+$ is significantly smaller than previous measurements.
