Title:Halal diet of Muslim students. Transition from home to campus environment

Abstract:My research is about how Muslim students eat in the limited environment and resources on the campus of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Like many other religions, Islam provides a set of rules about lawful (Halal) and unlawful (Haram) food. In this environment, how do Muslim students manage to eat properly in terms of the religious principles, or do they choose to eat more flexibly and allow themselves to be less strict about their food? And, what influence does that have on their perception of Islam and their religious identity? The focus is on the change of eating environment and dietary habits they go through as they move to campus, whether from a home community in Chicago or abroad, and move out of the Dining Hall to an apartment.

Using a comparative approach, we study how the historical narrative of African American and Latino Muslims relates to newer immigrant populations, primarily Arab American and South Asian American Muslim communities.
