Abstract:During this third project year, a network of three urban and one rural sampling stations was operated to monitor hazardous chemicals in the atmosphere of Illinois. Seventeen toxic trace elements were measured on airborne inhalable particles or as vapor. Stack and fugitive emissions from major industrial sources account for most of the increase in airborne trace element concentrations above regional background levels. Resuspended surface soil and dust were identified as important components of these emissions. Finally, a preliminary data base of toxic volatile organic concentrations at the sampling sites is presented.
