Title:The Kapitza resistance at metal-helium interfaces

Abstract:The Kapitza resistance has been measured between liquid or solid 3He or 4He and surfaces of Mg, Cu, W, and Au in the temperature range 0.03-0.3 K. The experimental data are in relatively good agreement with the acoustic mismatch theory modified so as to include phonon attenuation in the metal. Below 0.1 K the Kapitza resistance of liquid 3He is often reduced relative to that of liquid 4He , suggesting the presence of an enhanced thermal conductance between liquid 3He and metals, as has been observed in other laboratories. Measurements of the Kapitza resistance have also been made at liquid and solid 4He - Cu interfaces and at solid Ne-Cu interfaces at 0.4 - 1.2 K. The results show that the resistances at both liquid and solid He-Cu interfaces at these temperatures are anomalously low, but that the Ne-Cu boundary resistance may be adequately explained by the acoustic mismatch theory.
