|Abstract:||The advent of knowledge about reading is considered from a longitudinal perspective, with a review of research on preschool children's attempts to read. A three-strand construct of prereading is hypothesized which is oriented toward the child's view of reading and its social and communicative value, The proposed construct, which is supported by descriptive and reading research, has specific and general implications for instruction.|
