Abstract:As part of a multi-institutional study of seismic analysis, behavior, design and performance of the steel plate shear wall with coupling (SPSW-WC) system, an integrated analytical, numerical, and experimental study was conducted on a small-scale, three-story SPSW-WC specimen. The small-scale specimen’s design was based on the scaling down of one of the large-scale specimens that will be tested as part of the SPSW-WC program at the University of Illinois. The concepts of dimensional analysis and similitude were used to scale down the large-scale specimen. Analytical and numerical models were used to estimate the small-scale specimen’s ultimate strength and study its behavior under lateral loads. The experimental study consisted of a cyclic displacement loading test on the small-scale specimen. The system’s behavior was stable for much of the test, and the specimen was able to undergo large roof displacements. The analytical, numerical, and experimental results are presented and discussed.
