Abstract:As optical biosensors become increasing prominent in scientific research and medical diagnosis and analysis, it is also becoming increasingly important to develop test methods for the performance of biosensors. While there have been efforts in creating a standard approach in quantifying and comparing detection limits of biosensors, currently there is still a lot of discrepancy between different techniques. Through performing experiments to detect DNA binding with a Photonic Crystal (PC) biosensor, we explore methods to quantify important components of biosensor performance such as resolution and sensitivity. We wish to develop procedures in quantifying performance which are optimized to achieve the lowest detection limit possible with each sensor. An effective approach would enable future biosensor designers to evaluate and compare the performance of their new design and lead to strategies for performance improvement.
