Title:Synthesis of Aligned Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by Using Ferritin Doped PVA Catalysts

Abstract:Here we present a simple and straightforward method of patterning density controllable uniform catalyst lines for the growth of a horizontally aligned array of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on quartz through conventional photolithography. Ferritin doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is used as a negative photo-resist to pattern the catalyst lines on the surface of the quartz. The concentrations of ferritin in the PVA/ferritin catalyst lines are biased to control the density of the carbon nanotubes. In addition, the different structures of catalyst lines are biased to optimize the growth environment for PVA/ferritin based growth. This easy and universal method of patterning density controllable uniform catalyst lines on quartz yields results much better than that of ferritin and better than or equal to that of iron. Our proposed method not only replaces current catalyst pattern methods but also leads to greater usage of ferritin in forming the array of SWNTs.
