Abstract:The objective of this project is to grow biodegradable chitosan fibers that will be used as a scaffold for the growth of cartilage cells. Chitosan is positively charged and water soluble under acidic conditions and uncharged and insoluble under basic conditions. Hence, by using techniques of electro deposition, when chitosan solution in acidic conditions was used as the electrolyte, a sheet of chitosan was deposited onto the negative electrode. Next, by replacing the negative electrode with a gold-coated silicon wafer with thin rectangular patterns, chitosan was selectively deposited in the channels of the wafer, thereby enabling the fabrication of long chain chitosan fibers.
