Title:Synchronization of Wireless Sensor Networks with Visual Light Communication

Abstract:We propose that free space optical communication with the use of LEDs is not only a viable communication option but can provide significant gains over communicating with radio frequency (RF) in certain situations. The lighting industry is already moving towards LEDs and this fact can be utilized to add communication to lighting at the same time. The circuitry to transmit is fairly simple and cheap. The receiver circuitry is slightly more complex; however; it is still relatively cheap and even cheaper options can be explored. We built an analog transmission link with the capability to transmit data at a rate of 500 kilobits per second. It is proposed that synchronization of wireless sensor networks is possible with visual light communication and that it provides a large power gain over traditional RF methods.
