Title:Optofluidic Sensor for Sensing Fluid Properties and Protein Binding

Abstract:We aimed to present an optofluidic sensor based on integrating a flexible two-dimensional (2D) grating with nanopyramid arrays and a half-dome fluid chamber made by Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The motivation and purpose of our project is to develop a low-cost fluid monitor which has potential applications in medical treatments. In our experiment, the laser beam is diffracted before (reflection) and after (transmission) going through the grating and liquid in the fluid chamber. By analyzing the size, power and shape of the 2D diffraction patterns, we can retrieve multiple parameters of the liquid including the refractive index, pressure, and opacity with high sensitivity. The free-solution binding of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and anti-BSA IgG can also be detected with this sensor prototype. This low-cost, multi-functional, and reliable optofluidic sensor has the potential to be used as a monitor for biofluids such as a blood monitor in hemodialysis.
