Title:A Method for Implementing Low Power Synchronization in a Wireless Sensor Network

Abstract:Time synchronization is an important service in a wireless sensor network. Many applications require accurate synchronization to coordinate actions or time stamp events. An accurate synchronization across the network also helps the scheduling of communications so that energy waste due to collision can be minimized. In this thesis we propose an algorithm for e fficiently broadcasting time stamps across the network to reduce the energy overhead introduced by synchronization algorithms such as FTSP. The algorithm works by first establishing a hierarchical structure in the sensor network. A decentralized algorithm then solves the set cover problem between two adjacent levels so that fewer nodes in the network are required to broadcast while ensuring global synchronization in the network.
