Abstract: | Shannon, coal miner, discusses activities of the United Mine Worker's union in southern Illinois: its organization and administration, elections, finances, contracts, members and offices; union conflicts, strikes and violence; John L. Lewis and the local, national, and international UMW; districts and meetings. He also discusses coal mining in Zeigler and West Frankfort, Illinois: work as a trapper, mule driver, and mine examiner, shifts and wages, coal types, and electricity in the mines.
