Title:Casque Adornment , From the "Be more like a veiled (chameleon)" series
Author(s):Fanning, Cherie
Subject(s):Art and Design
Abstract:In this image the green iguana is adorned with a painting on transparency film. The casque, a structure exclusive the veiled chameleon, is held in place to disrupt our perception of the lizard. This momentary act of embellishing distinguishes this creature from the common green iguana. My use of non-invasive interferences attempts to blur the lines between function and status providing a new perspective on the value of adornments. My research involves a unique dichotomy of natural and manufactured patterns found in reptiles and how they translate into the value that reptile breeders and jewelers assign to these creations. These designer reptiles, bred to produce morphs, display extraordinary colors and patterns. As a designer and maker of jewelry I see a parallel in values found between designer reptiles and fine jewelry. Much like precious gemstones, the more rare the morph is considered, the higher the value. The designer reptiles aesthetics embody the concepts of beauty, status, and power associated with fine jewelry.
