Abstract:In an effort to improve the overall safety of the current and future air transportation system, researchers have been investigating the causes and series of events that can potentially lead to aircraft loss of control (LoC) as well as methods to prevent the occurrence of such events. This challenging problem has led to the development of an in-flight LoC prediction and prevention system, which is based on a quantitative approach for LoC characterization introduced by the Boeing Company and NASA Langley Research Center. This study presents a preliminary assessment of the proposed LoC prediction and prevention system through an analysis of the pilot-in-the-loop simulated flight test. The goal is to evaluate the system’s ability to arrest the development of an LoC sequence and assist the pilot in performing advanced maneuvers and in flying an aircraft through adverse environmental conditions, while preserving safe aircraft operation.
