Abstract:Studies have found that in Earth’s high latitude region the ionosphere is primarily influenced by energy flowing downward along magnetic field lines from high altitudes, but at middle and low latitudes the ionosphere is also affected by the energy and momentum transferred via up-propagating waves generated by weather systems in the lower atmosphere. These waves are a vitally important but under-explored facet of atmospheric physics. A lower atmosphere/ionosphere coupling experiment (LAICE) mission and a ground-based pump laser diode controller are designed to focus on these waves in the mesosphere and the thermosphere, respectively. These two control systems are implemented by two different technologies, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and a microcontroller with consideration of operating environment and power consumption. The implementation, testing, and performance evaluation of these two control systems are presented.
