Abstract:In mobile communication devices, size is often a limitation on the efficiency of signal transmission and reception at the frequencies of interest. In addressing this issue, the design of a size-limited microstrip patch antenna with dual GSM frequency bands and frequency tunability using a Paratek® ferroelectric varactor is presented. The microstrip patch antenna operates at the North American GSM frequencies of 850 MHz and 1900 MHz and is limited by a 25.4x25.4-mm square region on a dielectric substrate. The addition of a ferroelectric varactor on the patch surface allows tuning of the lower frequency band while the 1900 MHz band remains static. Simulations using a full-wave solver HFSS® are compared with the measurements of the fabricated microstrip patch antenna. The antenna reflection coefficient and bandwidth limitations are investigated and discussed.
