Abstract:This paper seeks to explore the role architecture plays in the revitalization process of a decayed downtown area. It begins by understanding why this urban area became so barren and how a catalytic reaction can revitalize the downtown area of East St. Louis, IL. It then forecasts future land-use for the downtown area, while also proposing a new urban design scheme for the area to successfully connect to other key areas. Finally, it focuses on the rehab of the historic Murphy Building.
