Abstract:What is the real purpose of education? Is it all about preparation for college and career or is it helping to develop critical thinkers who can shape a just and equitable society in order to lead good and purpose-filled lives? This talk considers examples from the US, Turkey, Spain, France, and Romania of how schools and communities can work together to promote individual and social growth. Some involve new media, others libraries and civic activism. Overall, the examples point to a more critical and dynamic conception of education goals as a necessary element of a healthy society.
