Abstract:The rates of adsorption and desorption of surfactants on solid surfaces were investigated using a packed bed apparatus. Using a first order kinetic expression, adsorption and desorption coefficients were obtained by fitting observed peaks from slug input experiments. All adsorption and desorption coefficients were within one order of magnitude of each other, regardless of the charge of the surfactant and surface, and always significantly less than the diffusion limit.
Measured surfactant adsorption rate constants were compared to predicted values based on a calculated energy profile between surfactant and surface. Electrostatic repulsion was found to play a minor role in determining the adsorption rate. Inclusion of an entropy of activation was necessary in order to predict the order of magnitude of the rates of adsorption. The resulting analogies with absolute rate theory and collision theory were both successful in describing the order of magnitude of the adsorption rate constants.
