Title:Investigation of Planar Waveguides and Components for Millimeter-Wave Integrated Circuits (Electromagnetics, Fin-Line, Dielectric)

Abstract:Several important elements in millimeter-wave integrated circuit systems are studied. Filter-type structures which are composed of a series of discontinuities are employed frequently in such systems. The study of the general discontinuity problem is thus very important.
The uniform fin-line structure is analyzed by using a spectral domain formulation with a moment method solution. This results in data for phase constants, mode functions and characteristic impedances. Two fundamentally different approaches for solving the discontinuity problem are presented. The first involves formulating the problem using unknowns in the plane of the metallization, and both a single discontinuity and an infinite arrray of discontinuities are studied. Solutions are obtained using a moment method in the spectral domain. The second approach uses unknowns in the transverse junction plane. Solutions using the conjugate gradient iterative method and the generalized variational procedure are studied. Scattering parameter data for several examples is presented.
Rectangular dielectric waveguide filter structures are analyzed by means of the effective dielectric constant method and an equivalent transmission line model. Insertion loss results are presented.
