Abstract:Activity coefficients at infinite dilution ((gamma)('(INFIN))'s) were determined for several classes of solutes in the polar solvents 1-octanol, acetophenone, and furfural at 20, 40, and 60(DEGREES)C by a gas chromatographic technique. An improved form of the Modified Separation of Cohesive Energy Density model was developed to predict (gamma)('(INFIN))'s using pure component and temperature independent parameters. For about 3000 protic and aprotic, but nonaqueous and nonionic (gamma)('(INFIN))'s over wide temperature ranges, an average deviation of 11% was achieved with few unsatisfactory predictions. Overall, the temperature dependence of the (gamma)('(INFIN))'s was characterized adequately by the use of universal temperature coefficients and a group energy parameter. The model, with its strengths of simplicity in formulation and application, and physically intuitive parameters, represents an excellent engineering tool to predict the solution behavior at infinite dilution.
