|Abstract:||The purpose of this research was to present the early history of the Aesthetic Education Program from 1967 to 1969. The areas of focus for the study were as follows: (1) an historical perspective of governmental influence on education; (2) an historical perspective of the government and the arts; (3) the sequence of events leading to the initiation of the Aesthetic Education Program; (4) the chronology of events from July 1967 to September 1969; (5) the relationship between the JDR III Fund and the Aesthetic Education Program.
First, a brief historical perspective of the government and education was presented. The establishment of the Office of Education in 1867 was highlighted along with legislation which was, in retrospect, of vital importance to the Aesthetic Education Program.
Second, a small segment of the history of the government and its relationship to the arts was emphasized. This period began with President Eisenhower's Commission on National Goals in 1961.
Third, the events which led to the development of the Aesthetic Education Program were researched. A brief overview concerning the developmental conference and its importance to the Arts and Humanities Program and the Aesthetic Education Program was presented. A series of developmental conferences was the source for the Aesthetic Education Program.
Fourth, a chronology beginning with the Report on the Planning Phase in 1967 to the end of Phase I in 1969 was outlined. An account of the four working conferences, National Advisory Committee Meetings and the Teacher Education Conferences were included in the chronology. Because there was essentially no relationship between the JDR III Fund, Arts in General Education Project and the Aesthetic Education Program, this question was included in the chronology section.
