Abstract: Considerable emphasis is now being given to the design or redesign of online systems in order to make them "easier to use" and thus "more attractive" to potential users. But do we really know what is meant by "easier to use" and "more attractive" in this context? These were the questions addressed at the Twenty-Third Annual Clinic on Library Applications of Data Processing, held in the Levis Faculty Center, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, on April 20-22, 1986. This volume contains the texts of the papers presented at the meeting. All of the authors explore the idea of "user friendly" as it applies to online catalogs and related tools. Some of them summarize their own experiences in the implementation of online systems in academic and public libraries, some look at the broader psychological and social aspects of interaction between users and systems, and some attempt to predict what the future may hold for online bibliographic systems.
