Abstract:Commercial jets may occasionally lose power in all engines. In such an emergency, the aircraft generates 0 thrust, and can gain 0 altitude. Thus, the flight crew has a single chance for landing, and 0 room for pilot error. My dissertation study aims to design an intelligent cockpit system for powerless emergency landings. In the occurrence of total loss of power, the proposed intelligent cockpit system will indicate a list of safe touchdown points within aircraft glide range. Once the flight crew selects a safe touchdown point from the list, the system will indicate: 1-The optimum landing trajectory to the selected touchdown point on the navigation panel (i.e. the right-hand side avionics panel in the photo), 2-The optimum glide speed and optimum roll angle on the primary flight display (i.e. the left-hand side avionics panel in the photo), Using the yoke in the photo, the flight crew can follow the directions shown on the avionics panels, and maximize the odds of a safe touchdown. Long-term use of the intelligent cockpit system is expected to result in 0 hull loss, and 0 casualty in future occurrences of total loss of power. Photo by: Kivanc A.
