Abstract:Along with Alfred Schnittke and Edison Denisov, Gubaidulina is now acknowledged as one the most influential Russian composers of the post-Stalin generation, and the only one still alive. Her works include a viola concerto, two cello concerti, a string trio, four string quartets, works for percussion ensemble, symphonic and choral works, and many works for unconventional instruments and ensembles, such as Japanese Koto, Chinese Zheng and Russian Bayan. Her output of piano works includes one piano concerto and five solo works, which all belong to her early compositional period before she gained international fame in the 1980s. This paper was written to support two lecture recitals, which focus on Gubaidulina’s solo piano works. The text of investigation includes a brief biography about her musical background and influences, and discussions of each work, followed by performance suggestions. In addition, the solo piano pieces are discussed in the order of their perceived levels of difficulty. The conclusion emphasizes Gubaidulina’s contribution to the piano repertoire, the pedagogical value of her works, the need for this study and that her piano solo works deserve further exploration and performance. This document closes with a bibliography, two appendixes of her solo piano works and complete works, and the contents of the doctoral project lecture recitals.
