Abstract:Just like how classical computers depend on hard-drive for storing data, quantum memories are essential elements for future quantum information processors. In the Kwiats laboratory, we aim to build a highly efficiency quantum memory system for photons. By using three highly reflectivity mirrors, we are able to create a reflectivity pattern shown in the photo. The photons are reflected off the circular mirror 170 times and are trapped within the cavity for more than a micro-second before exiting the storage system. The captured image shows the transmission of light through the mirror. Due to the high reflectivity of the mirrors (i.e low transmission), the image has to be taken over a course of 30 sec in almost complete darkness.
