Abstract:In the mid-twentieth century, composers began to experiment with aleatoric composition in an effort to challenge conventional understandings of the relationship between the composer and the performer. Composers of the New York School like Morton Feldman and Christian Wolff played a major role in expanding the parameters of composition, as did Italian composer Sylvano Bussotti. All three composers developed notation systems adapted to their compositional ideas. However, these original notation systems might leave the uninformed performer unsure of how to understand and interpret the scores. This thesis will focus on aleatoric music for violin by Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, and Sylvano Bussotti. The specific compositions to be explored are Projection 4 for Violin and Piano by Feldman, Duo for Violinist and Pianist by Wolff, and sensitivo per arco solo from the Sette Fogli collection by Bussotti. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the scores, especially the distinct way in which they are notated, and to discuss performance strategies for approaching the works paying close attention to performance challenges. The thesis is intended to guide professional violinists how to understand, interpret, and perform these works.
